International Mountain Day has been celebrated annually on December 11 since its promulgation by the United Nations General Assembly in January, 2003 by a resolution which states, in part, that the UN “Invites the international community and other relevant partners to consider joining the voluntary International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions…” and “encourages the international community to organize on this day events at all levels to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development...”
